Areas available

Wireless networking is now available throughout the Library building. You may need to reconnect if you walk with your laptop from one floor to another.

For best connections find a wireless access point (like in the picture on the right) with few people around it and sit with in sight of it for the best connection.

What you need

You will need a laptop with a wireless network card, but no special software is required.

The library also has laptops available at check out for use while in the library.

Printing

Printing is now available for users from their own laptops. Wireless printing is still part of the print quota system and it requires a few steps to set up. Printer 3 is the printer in the library that you need to use when you set it up. We have put the wireless printing setup instructions on a separate page. Follow the link below to access those instructions.

Connect to your N: drive

You don't have direct access to the N drive when you log onto the campus wireless network but you can get to the web version of your N drive. Having access through the web gives you access to your New Paltz personal network space from anywhere in the world. The web version of the N drive is different so read these quick instructions.

When you click on the link below a login prompt will ask you for your NPCUID and password. After you login you will see a web page with folders on the left, click on the one labeled DriveN. This will show the contents of your N Drive on the right side of the page and a series of menus starting with "File" just above your files.

To upload a file just click on the File menu link and choose "Upload". In the file upload box click the browse button to select your file and click the Plus sign at the end of that box to select a second file or third etc.

To open a file you must download it and when finished with the file you must up load it again like it says above. NOTE: When you open a file save it right away to your desktop or documents folder so you can find it to upload later.

Connecting to the wireless network

If you have connected to the wireless in the library before your laptop will recognize our wireless network and you should see a message in the lower right of your screen indicating a successful connection. If it does not connect automatically open a list of wireless networks and select the one called "SUNY New Paltz" and connect. See Example below. Once you connect, open a web browser and a login page will display. Enter your NPCUID and you will be able to browse the web.

If You Have Never Connected To the Campus Wireless

If you have never connected to the campus wireless connection you have to open a list of available wireless networks. The library only uses connections that begin with "SUNY New Paltz". You may see other networks only select ones that start with "SUNY New Paltz".

NOTE:

The procedure to connect is a bit different depending on your wireless connection device in your laptop and what operating system you have on the laptop. You should be generally familiar with how to make a wireless connections on your own laptop.

Here are general connecting instructions and a specific example below that.

On Windows PCs the different procedures for wireless connecting have a few things in common. Here is a very general procedure for connecting for the first time.

  1. You can access wireless connections through a small Icon by the clock.
  2. These icons typically look like an antenna with waves around it or a PC monitor with waves drawn around it.
  3. You click on the Icon to bring up a list of available connections or you right click on the icon to choose an option to view available networks or connect to a network.
  4. When you connect for the first time it generally offers to remember the network or to automatically connect in the future.

The more specific example below may be helpful.

First Time Connection in Windows XP

To connect in Windows XP using Windows default wireless setup utilities click on your wireless connector Icon by the clock. It should look like a tiny monitor with waves on the side and if you are not connected it will have a red X in front.
