Challenges to Resources
Students, faculty, and staff of the college may challenge a resource in the library collection. A challenge to a library resource must be based on the resource violating the library’s collection development and selection policies, including the library’s adherence to and endorsement of the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights. A challenged resource will remain available to library users during the resource review period.
Challenge Procedure
- A member of the campus or regional community wishing to challenge a library resource must submit a completed Challenge to Resource Request form to the Dean of the library. The form is available at the circulation desk and on the Collection Development Policy page of the library website. The completed form may be submitted electronically via email, or a printed form may be submitted to the Dean of the Library by mail or by delivery to the circulation desk staff. A challenge request cannot be submitted anonymously. Please print legibly or type your response. Incomplete forms will be returned and only considered once they are complete.
- The Dean will acknowledge the receipt of the completed form via email, including a scanned copy of the request form received.
- The challenge request will be considered by a committee consisting of the Library Management Team, including the Collection Management Librarian and any relevant subject area library liaisons. The committee will include a member of the Information Literacy Unit. This committee will determine if the challenge resource is in violation of the library’s collection policy and its commitments to intellectual freedom. The committee will send its formal recommendation to the Dean of the library.
- The Dean of the library will consider the Management Team and librarians’ recommendation. The Dean will make the final decision on the challenged resource.
- The Dean will notify the individual requesting the challenge of the library’s decision in a formal letter. It may take longer than six weeks due to current staffing levels.
- An appeal of this decision may not be made. The library’s final decision on a specific resource will stand for three years, at which point a resource is eligible to be challenged again or returned to the collection if it had been removed.
