The Truth about Sojourner & Slavery in Ulster County

Join us on March 6th from 4:30pm to 6pm for a panel discussion about Sojourner Truth’s significance to the Ulster County area. We will consider Truth not as a single woman who achieved extraordinary things, but also as a woman whose accomplishments hold particular resonance for the SUNY New Paltz community. Thus, the panel will explore the ways in which scholars, students, and members from local communities can assist SUNY New Paltz in legitimizing Truth’s legacy. We will also discuss Ulster County’s ties to slavery.

Panelists:

  • Nicole Carr – Assistant Professor, Black Studies
  • A.J. Williams-Meyers – Professor Emeritus, Black Studies
  • Greer Smith – Director, TRANSART and Cultural Services
  • Susan Stessin-Cohn – New Paltz Town Historian
  • Mark Colvson – Dean of the Library (moderator)
