The library provides access to typewriters and zine-making kits to support scholarship that integrates hands-on creative work with research and artistic practice.

TYPEWRITERS 

Availability

  • There are 2 typewriters available for 4 hour in-Library use only.
  • There are 2 typewriters available for 7-day check out.
  • Users are responsible for supplying their own paper.
  • Typewriter ribbon replacements and instruction on using the typewriter are available by appointment through the zine library research consultation form.

Eligibility

  • Typewriters can be checked out from the Library by current students, faculty and staff. Community members can check out typewriters with the permission of a librarian, for 4 hour in library use only.
  • Users must have a current SUNY New Paltz ID, and have read and agree to the Typewriter Lending Policy.
  • Only one typewriter can be checked out per person. Under no circumstances will a user be allowed to check out a typewriter for another person.
  • You may not borrow a typewriter until all your fines are cleared.

Loan Period

  • Typewriters are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The Library cannot guarantee that typewriters will be available. Typewriters cannot be renewed. The Library does not take reservations.
  • All typewriters and accessories must be returned to the Library Front Desk during regular operating hours. Please DO NOT place them in the Library drop boxes.
  • The loan period is either 4 hour in Library use only or 7 day check out.
  • All equipment must be returned no less than 30 minutes before the Library closes or an overdue fine will be imposed.
  • There is a possible 24-hour turnaround time for maintenance on returned typewriters.

Fines and Damages

  • All fines and fees with be assigned on a case by case basis by a circulation staff supervisor.
  • 7 Day and 4 hour typewriters: a $2.00 late fee will be assessed when returned past its due time. Fines will be recorded on the borrower’s library record and may result in borrowing and registration restrictions.
  • Typewriter Cases: A $2.00 late fee will be assessed for each day or portion thereof that the typewriter case is returned past its due date. Fines will be recorded on the borrower’s library record and may result in borrowing and registration restrictions.
  • There is a $10.00 processing fee for lost items. This processing fee is in addition to the overdue fees.
  • Users are responsible for damage to and/or loss or theft of loaned materials. Users are required to report any observed problems with the typewriter’s functionality during their borrowing period.
  • The replacement cost is $200 for a lost or stolen typewriter. If the typewriter malfunctions during normal use, there is no charge; damage outside of normal use (for example, dropping the typewriter) will be assessed and a fine of up to $100 may be applied.
  • A charge of $50 will be assessed for each lost or broken typewriter case, plus a processing fee, depending on severity.

ZINE KITS

Availability

  • There are 2 zine making kits available for 4 hour in-Library use only.
  • There are 2 zine making kits available for 7 day check out.
  • Instruction on zine-making techniques and assembly is available by appointment through the zine library research consultation form.

Zine Making Kit Materials

  • 1 regular scissors
  • 2 funky scissors
  • 2 glue sticks
  • 1 felt tip pen
  • 1 micron pen
